Virulent phages are bacteriophages that, on infecting a host bacterium, invariably follow the lytic cycle: their DNA immediately directs the production of new phage particles, and the host cell is lysed (destroyed) at the end of every single infection, releasing the new phages. T-even phages such as T4 are typical virulent phages. Temperate phages, by contrast, have a second option available to them: on infection, their DNA can instead integrate into the host bacterium's own chromosome, becoming a prophage that causes no harm and is simply copied along with the host chromosome at each cell division, over many generations, without producing new phage particles.
