Lanthanoid contraction is the gradual decrease in size of lanthanoid atoms/ions from La to Lu due to poor shielding by 4f electrons.

As we move from lanthanum (La, Z=57) to lutetium (Lu, Z=71), electrons are progressively added to the inner 4f subshell. The 4f electrons have a diffuse, poorly directional shape and therefore shield the outer electrons from the nucleus very imperfectly.

Because of this poor shielding, the effective nuclear charge felt by the outer electrons increases steadily along the series. As a result, the atomic and ionic (M3+) radii decrease regularly, though only slightly, from La to Lu. This overall contraction in size is called the lanthanoid contraction.
