De Broglie explained Bohr's angular-momentum quantisation by treating the electron as a standing matter wave: 2pir = n*lambda leads directly to mvr = nh/2pi.

Bohr's second postulate states that an electron can revolve only in those orbits for which its angular momentum is an integral multiple of h/(2*pi):

m v r = n h / (2 pi), n = 1, 2, 3, ...

Bohr assumed this without explanation. De Broglie provided a physical reason using the wave nature of matter.

De Broglie argued that the electron in a circular orbit behaves like a wave running around the orbit. For the orbit to be stable, the wave must form a STANDING wave - it must join onto itself smoothly after one revolution. This requires the circumference of the orbit to be a whole number of de Broglie wavelengths:

2 pi r = n lambda, n = 1, 2, 3, ...

If the circumference were not a whole number of wavelengths, the wave would interfere destructively with itself on successive turns and die out - such an orbit cannot be a stable (stationary) state.

The de Broglie wavelength of the electron is lambda = h / (m v). Substituting:
