Three 10 Ω resistors in parallel combine to 10/3 Ω ≈ 3.33 Ω.
Working principle of a potentiometer: A potentiometer consists of a long uniform wire of resistance, through which a constant current is maintained by a driver battery. Since the wire is uniform, the potential drop per unit length (potential gradient ) is constant along the wire: (a constant). Consequently, the potential difference across any length of the wire, measured from one end, is directly proportional to that length: . This allows the wire itself to act as a source of a known, continuously variable potential difference, without drawing any current from the cell being measured at balance (null-deflection condition) — making it a far more accurate voltmeter/emf-measuring device than an ordinary voltmeter.
Comparing emfs of two primary cells:
- A constant current is passed through the potentiometer wire AB using an auxiliary (driver) battery, rheostat, and key, setting up a steady potential gradient along the wire.
- Using a two-way key, cell is connected (through a galvanometer and jockey) in the secondary circuit, and the jockey is slid along the wire until the galvanometer shows zero deflection (null point). Let this balancing length be . Then .
- The two-way key is switched to connect cell instead, and the new balancing (null) length is found. Then . …
