Every moving particle has an associated wavelength given by de Broglie's relation λ = h/p, linking its wave and particle nature.

Louis de Broglie proposed that just as radiation exhibits a dual (wave-particle) nature, matter too should exhibit wave-like properties. He suggested that a particle of momentum pp has an associated wavelength λ\lambda given by:

λ=hp=hmv\lambda = \dfrac{h}{p} = \dfrac{h}{mv}

Explanation of terms:

  • λ\lambda (de Broglie wavelength): the wavelength of the matter wave associated with the moving particle.
  • hh: Planck's constant (6.63×10−34 J s6.63 \times 10^{-34}\ \text{J s}), the same universal constant that relates a photon's energy to its frequency.
  • p=mvp = mv: the momentum of the particle, where mm is its mass and vv is its velocity. …
