de Broglie proposed that every moving particle has an associated 'matter wave' whose wavelength is inversely proportional to its momentum, given by λ=h/p\lambda = h/p.

de Broglie's relation

Louis de Broglie proposed that matter, like radiation, has a dual (particle-wave) character. A particle of mass mm moving with velocity vv (momentum p=mvp = mv) has a wave associated with it, called the matter wave or de Broglie wave, whose wavelength is

λ=hp=hmv\lambda = \dfrac{h}{p} = \dfrac{h}{mv}

Terms:

  • λ\lambda = de Broglie wavelength associated with the moving particle
  • hh = Planck's constant (6.63×10−346.63 \times 10^{-34} J s)
  • p=mvp = mv = momentum of the particle (mm = mass, vv = velocity) …
