Advantageous uses of Eddy currents
Eddy currents are circulating (loop) currents induced within the body of a conductor when it experiences a changing magnetic flux. While often undesirable (causing heating/energy loss in transformer cores, machines), they are usefully applied in several devices:
-
Electromagnetic damping (dead-beat galvanometers): The coil of a galvanometer is wound on a metallic (aluminium) frame. When the coil oscillates, eddy currents induced in the frame oppose the motion (by Lenz's law), quickly damping the oscillations so the pointer settles rapidly at the correct reading ('dead-beat').
-
Induction furnace: A high-frequency alternating magnetic field is used to induce strong eddy currents in a metal placed inside a coil; the heat generated ( losses) is enough to melt the metal — used for melting ores and metals without direct contact.
-
Electromagnetic brakes: In electric trains and some roller-coasters, strong electromagnets are activated near the rotating wheels/metal rails; the induced eddy currents oppose the motion (Lenz's law), providing smooth braking without mechanical contact.
