Eddy currents are used advantageously in magnetic braking, induction furnaces, induction heating, electromagnetic damping of instruments, and speedometers.

Eddy currents are induced circulating currents set up in the body of a bulk conductor when the magnetic flux through it changes. By Lenz's law they oppose the change producing them. Although they cause energy loss (heating) in machine cores, they are deliberately used in several ways:

  1. Magnetic (electromagnetic) braking: In electric trains, electromagnets set up eddy currents in the moving rails/drum; these oppose the motion and bring the vehicle smoothly to rest without mechanical friction.

  2. Induction furnace: A metal placed in a strong high-frequency alternating field has large eddy currents induced in it; the heat generated melts the metal. Used for melting and refining metals.

  3. Induction heating / induction cooktops: The same eddy-current heating cooks food in the metal vessel placed on the cooktop.
