Eddy currents are the induced currents that circulate within the body of a conductor when the magnetic flux through it changes. While they are often undesirable (causing energy loss as heat in transformer cores and motors, minimised by lamination), they are also usefully applied in several devices:
- Magnetic braking (electromagnetic brakes): In trains and roller-coasters, a strong magnet is brought near a moving metallic wheel/rail. The changing flux induces eddy currents in the metal, and by Lenz's law these currents oppose the relative motion, providing smooth, wear-free braking without physical contact.
- Electromagnetic damping: In galvanometers, the coil is wound on a metallic (aluminium) frame. As the coil moves, eddy currents induced in the frame oppose its motion, quickly damping out oscillations so the pointer settles to its steady deflection rapidly (dead-beat galvanometer). …
