The female reproductive system has a pair of ovaries, a pair of oviducts (fallopian tubes with fimbriae, infundibulum, ampulla, isthmus), the uterus (womb) with its cervix, and the vagina, plus external genitalia; label these in the diagram.

The female reproductive system of a woman is located in the pelvic region and consists of the following parts:

  1. Ovaries (a pair): These are the primary female sex organs, one on each side of the lower abdomen. Each ovary produces the ova (eggs) and secretes the female hormones oestrogen and progesterone.

  2. Oviducts / Fallopian tubes (a pair): Each fallopian tube extends from the region of the ovary to the uterus and conducts the ovum. Its parts are:

    • Infundibulum: the funnel-shaped opening near the ovary, bearing finger-like fimbriae that collect the released ovum.
    • Ampulla: the wider, longer middle part, where fertilisation usually occurs.
    • Isthmus: the last narrow part that joins the uterus.
  3. Uterus (womb): A single, hollow, pear-shaped muscular organ where the foetus develops. Its wall has three layers - the outer perimetrium, the thick middle muscular myometrium, and the inner glandular lining, the endometrium (which undergoes changes during the menstrual cycle and forms the site for implantation).

  4. Cervix: The narrow, lower part of the uterus that opens into the vagina; the cervical canal along with the vagina forms the birth canal.

  5. Vagina: A muscular tube that receives the sperm during copulation and serves as the birth canal.

  6. External genitalia (vulva): includes the labia majora, labia minora, clitoris and the associated structures.
