- What is oogenesis? Oogenesis is the process by which a mature haploid female gamete (ovum/egg) is formed from a diploid germ cell (oogonium) in the ovary.
- Process of oogenesis:
- In the foetal ovary itself, oogonia (2n) multiply by mitosis and then enter meiosis-I, becoming primary oocytes, but their meiotic division is arrested at the prophase-I stage; each primary oocyte gets surrounded by a layer of granulosa cells to form a primary follicle. A female is thus born with a fixed, non-renewable stock of primary follicles.
- From puberty onwards, under hormonal stimulation, a batch of primary follicles matures every menstrual cycle into secondary follicles, and then into a tertiary/Graafian follicle.
- Just before ovulation, the primary oocyte completes its first meiotic division, forming a large secondary oocyte and a tiny first polar body.
- The secondary oocyte begins the second meiotic division, but this too is arrested (at metaphase-II), and it is this secondary oocyte, surrounded by the zona pellucida and corona radiata, that is released from the Graafian follicle at ovulation. …
