Q.Give the IUPAC name of each of the following compounds:

(i) CH3—CO—CH(CH2CH3)—CH(CH3)—CH=CH—CH3 (a ketone: a CH3—C(=O)— group attached to a carbon bearing an ethyl branch, then a carbon bearing a methyl branch, then a —CH=CH—CH3 unit)
(ii) A cyclohexene ring bearing a nitro group (—NO2) on the sp3 ring carbon that is directly adjacent (allylic) to the ring C=C double bond.

  1. Number from the end nearer the ketone (the senior group) so the carbonyl gets the lowest locant: 3-ethyl-4-methylhept-5-en-2-one.
  2. The ring C=C fixes C-1/C-2, and the nitro on the adjacent allylic carbon takes the lowest locant, C-3: 3-nitrocyclohex-1-ene.

(i) The unsaturated ketone

Structure: CH3-CO-CH(CH2CH3)-CH(CH3)-CH=CH-CH3\text{CH}_3\text{-CO-CH(CH}_2\text{CH}_3\text{)-CH(CH}_3\text{)-CH=CH-CH}_3

1. Principal characteristic group. The C=O\text{C=O} flanked by two carbons is a ketone (suffix -one). It must lie in the parent chain and receive the lowest locant, taking priority over the C=C when choosing the numbering direction.

2. Parent chain. The longest chain containing both the carbonyl and the double bond runs from the methyl next to the carbonyl to the terminal methyl — seven carbons (hept). The ethyl group is a branch, not part of the chain, because incorporating it would leave the carbonyl out.

3. Numbering. Number from the carbonyl end so the ketone gets locant 2 (from the other end it would be 6):

CH31−C2(=O)−CH3(C2H5)−CH4(CH3)−CH5=CH6−CH37\underset{1}{\text{CH}_3}-\underset{2}{\text{C}}(=\text{O})-\underset{3}{\text{CH}}(\text{C}_2\text{H}_5)-\underset{4}{\text{CH}}(\text{CH}_3)-\underset{5}{\text{CH}}=\underset{6}{\text{CH}}-\underset{7}{\text{CH}_3}

Ketone at C-2, double bond at C-5, ethyl at C-3, methyl at C-4. …
