For 19 teams in a knock-out tournament: 18 matches, 13 byes, and 5 rounds; the upper half (10 teams) gets 6 byes and 2 first-round matches, and the lower half (9 teams) gets 7 byes and 1 first-round match.

Calculations

  • Number of teams, N = 19
  • Total matches = N − 1 = 19 − 1 = 18
  • Next power of 2 above 19 is 32 (since 2⁴ = 16 is too small and 2⁵ = 32)
  • Byes = 32 − 19 = 13
  • Rounds = log₂32 = 5
  • Since N is odd: Upper half = (N + 1)/2 = (19 + 1)/2 = 10 teams; Lower half = (N − 1)/2 = (19 − 1)/2 = 9 teams
  • Byes (13) is odd, so: Upper-half byes = (Byes − 1)/2 = (13 − 1)/2 = 6; Lower-half byes = (Byes + 1)/2 = (13 + 1)/2 = 7
  • Teams that actually play in Round 1 = N − Byes = 19 − 13 = 6 teams → 3 matches (6/2 = 3)

Check: byes (13) + Round-1 winners (3) = 16 teams entering Round 2, and 16 = 2⁴, so the draw is a clean bracket from Round 2 onward.

Distribution of byes between the halves

Numbering the teams 1–10 as the Upper half and 11–19 as the Lower half, and applying the prescribed bye-allotment order (1st bye → last team of the Lower half; 2nd → first team of the Upper half; 3rd → last team of the Upper half; 4th → first team of the Lower half — then the same 4-step cycle repeats):

Bye No.PositionTeam
1Last of Lower half19
2First of Upper half1
3Last of Upper half10
4First of Lower half11
5Last of Lower half18
6First of Upper half2
7Last of Upper half9
8First of Lower half12
9Last of Lower half17
10First of Upper half3
11Last of Upper half8
12First of Lower half13
13Last of Lower half16

So: Upper-half byes (6): Teams 1, 2, 3, 8, 9, 10. Lower-half byes (7): Teams 11, 12, 13, 16, 17, 18, 19.

Round-1 fixture

The teams left without a bye must play in Round 1:

  • Upper half: Teams 4, 5, 6, 7 remain → 2 matches — Team 4 vs Team 5, Team 6 vs Team 7.
  • Lower half: Teams 14, 15 remain → 1 match — Team 14 vs Team 15.
