Biogas is a methane-rich fuel gas produced by anaerobic microbial digestion of organic waste.

Biogas is produced when organic material such as cattle dung ('gobar'), plant waste and sewage is broken down by microbes in the absence of oxygen (anaerobic digestion) inside a biogas plant. The key microbes are methanogens (e.g. Methanobacterium) present in the anaerobic sludge and in the rumen of cattle.
