Deacon's process apparatus for the industrial manufacture of chlorine
Deacon's process apparatus for the industrial manufacture of chlorine

Deacon's process makes Cl2 by air-oxidising HCl over CuCl2: 4HCl + O2 -> 2Cl2 + 2H2O; with water, Cl2 + H2O -> HCl + HOCl, and HOCl gives nascent oxygen (bleaching).

Deacon's process (industrial manufacture of chlorine):

Hydrogen chloride gas is oxidised by atmospheric oxygen in the presence of cupric chloride (CuCl2) as catalyst at about 723 K:

4HCl + O2 --(CuCl2, 723 K)--> 2Cl2 + 2H2O

A mixture of HCl gas and air is passed over the heated catalyst packed in a reaction chamber; the chlorine produced is collected after cooling. (Diagram description, since it cannot be drawn here: a catalyst tower/chamber packed with pumice stones soaked in CuCl2, kept at about 723 K, into which HCl and air are fed; the exiting gases are cooled and the Cl2 separated. The essential feature is the CuCl2-coated catalyst bed at 723 K.)
