White phosphorus + dry Cl2Cl_2 ⇒ PCl3PCl_3; PCl3PCl_3 converts acetic acid to acetyl chloride; chlorine oxidises FeSO4FeSO_4 to ferric salts and reacts with turpentine to give HCl + carbon. (Main choice of the OR.)

(I answer the main stem of the OR question.)

(i) Preparation of phosphorus trichloride (PCl3PCl_3): a slow stream of dry chlorine is passed over gently heated white phosphorus; PCl3PCl_3 distils over:

P4+6Cl2→4PCl3P_4+6Cl_2\to4PCl_3

Reaction of PCl3PCl_3 with acetic acid — it converts the –OH of the carboxylic acid to –Cl, giving acetyl chloride:

3CH3COOH+PCl3→3CH3COCl+H3PO33CH_3COOH+PCl_3\to3CH_3COCl+H_3PO_3

(ii) Chlorine with ferrous sulphate — chlorine is an oxidising agent and oxidises Fe2+Fe^{2+} to Fe3+Fe^{3+}:

6FeSO4+3Cl2→2Fe2(SO4)3+2FeCl36FeSO_4+3Cl_2\to2Fe_2(SO_4)_3+2FeCl_3
