Series grouping is useful when external resistance ≫ internal resistance, i.e. R1 (internal) < R2 (external): option (b).

For n identical cells (emf E, internal resistance r each):

  • In series the current is I_series = nE/(R + nr).
  • In parallel the current is I_parallel = nE/(nR + r).

Compare them: I_series > I_parallel requires R + nr < nR + r, which simplifies to r < R, i.e. the external resistance must exceed the internal resistance.
