Setting the heats equal and taking square roots gives r = √(R1 R2).

Let the cell have emf E and internal resistance r. When it drives current through an external resistor R for time t, the heat produced in that resistor is

H = I² R t = [E/(R + r)]² R t = E² R t/(R + r)².

For R1: H1 = E² R1 t/(R1 + r)².

For R2 (same time t): H2 = E² R2 t/(R2 + r)².

Given H1 = H2:

R1/(R1 + r)² = R2/(R2 + r)².

Take the (positive) square root of both sides:

√R1/(R1 + r) = √R2/(R2 + r).

Cross-multiply:

√R1 (R2 + r) = √R2 (R1 + r) …
