Q.Establish the relation between the resistances of arms of wheatstone bridge in balance conditions. OR The ratio of lengths and masses of three wires of same metal are 3:2:13 : 2 : 1 and 1:2:31 : 2 : 3 respectively. Find the ratio of resistances of those wires.

A Wheatstone bridge is balanced when no current flows through the galvanometer; applying Kirchhoff's rules then gives PQ=RS\dfrac{P}{Q}=\dfrac{R}{S}. (This question offers an OR alternative on resistance ratios — the main derivation is answered here.)

Setup. Four resistances P,Q,R,SP, Q, R, S form the arms of a quadrilateral ABCDABCD. A cell is connected across one diagonal (AA–CC) and a galvanometer GG across the other (BB–DD). Arms: PP in ABAB, QQ in BCBC, RR in ADAD, SS in DCDC.

Balance condition. The bridge is balanced when the galvanometer shows no deflection, i.e. current through it Ig=0I_g=0. Then points BB and DD are at the same potential.

Let I1I_1 flow through PP and QQ, and I2I_2 through RR and SS (since none is diverted at balance).

Equal potentials across the parallel paths give, for A→BA\to B and A→DA\to D:

I1P=I2R(1)I_1 P = I_2 R \qquad (1)

and for B→CB\to C and D→CD\to C:

I1Q=I2S(2)I_1 Q = I_2 S \qquad (2)

Dividing (1) by (2): …
