A population is the whole group studied, a sample is a selected part of it, and a variable is a measurable characteristic that differs from unit to unit. Two examples of each are given below.

Definitions

  • Population: the entire set of units under investigation.
  • Sample: a representative subset drawn from the population.
  • Variable: a quantity or attribute that takes different values across units (e.g. height, income, marks).
