Poor 4f shielding causes lanthanoid contraction; partially-filled d-orbitals undergoing d-d transitions cause colour in transition-metal ions.

(a) Lanthanoid contraction: As we move across the lanthanoid series from La to Lu, there is a regular and steady decrease in the atomic and ionic radii with increasing atomic number — this is called lanthanoid contraction. It occurs because, as electrons are added to the diffuse 4f-subshell, they shield the outer (5s, 5p, 6s) electrons very poorly from the increasing nuclear charge (poor/imperfect shielding by 4f orbitals). As a result, the effective nuclear charge experienced by the outer electrons increases steadily across the series, pulling the electron cloud inward and causing a progressive contraction in size. This contraction is cumulatively significant and explains why the second- and third-row transition elements of a given group (e.g. Zr and Hf, Nb and Ta) have almost identical atomic radii and very similar properties.
