Step 1 — Chambers and septa. The heart, enclosed in the pericardium, has four chambers: the thin-walled right and left atria above, separated by the inter-atrial septum, and the thick-walled right and left ventricles below, separated by the inter-ventricular septum (the left ventricle's wall is noticeably thicker, since it must pump blood around the entire body while the right ventricle pumps only to the adjoining lungs); an atrio-ventricular septum separates each atrium from the ventricle beneath it.

Step 2 — Valves. The tricuspid valve (three cusps) guards the right atrium-right ventricle opening; the bicuspid/mitral valve (two cusps) guards the left atrium-left ventricle opening; a pulmonary semilunar valve guards the exit of the pulmonary artery from the right ventricle, and an aortic semilunar valve guards the exit of the aorta from the left ventricle. All four valves are purely pressure-operated, snapping shut whenever pressure on the far side threatens to push blood backward.

Step 3 — Vessels. Arteries carry blood away from the heart under high pressure through thick, muscular, elastic walls (the pulmonary artery is the exception that carries deoxygenated blood, to the lungs); veins carry blood back to the heart under low pressure through thinner walls, with internal valves in the limb veins to stop backflow (the pulmonary veins are the exception, carrying oxygenated blood from the lungs); capillaries, a single endothelial cell thick, connect the smallest arteries to the smallest veins and are the only site of actual exchange with the tissues. …
