The Bohr effect describes how a rise in the local partial pressure of carbon dioxide, a rise in hydrogen-ion concentration (fall in pH), and a rise in temperature -- exactly the conditions produced by actively respiring tissue -- together shift the oxyhaemoglobin dissociation curve to the right. This rightward shift means that, at any given pO2, haemoglobin's affinity for oxygen is reduced, so it releases proportionally more of its bound oxygen.
