The pneumotaxic centre, located in the pons, does not generate the basic breathing rhythm itself but moderates the output of the medullary respiratory rhythm centre, chiefly by reducing the duration of inspiration and so indirectly increasing the overall breathing rate when its activity increases -- a fine-tuning influence layered on top of the medulla's self-generated rhythm. The chemosensitive area, located within the medulla itself, is highly sensitive to even small increases in the CO2 concentration (and accompanying fall in pH) of the blood and cerebrospinal fluid; when tissue metabolism rises and generates more CO2, the chemosensitive area detects this and signals the respiratory rhythm centre to increase both the rate and depth of breathing, expelling the extra CO2 …
