Insulin, secreted by the beta cells of the islets of Langerhans in direct response to a rise in blood glucose (as after a meal), lowers blood glucose back toward normal by promoting glucose uptake into cells (particularly muscle and fat) and by promoting glycogenesis (glycogen storage) chiefly in the liver. Glucagon, secreted by the alpha cells in response to a fall in blood glucose (as during fasting), has the opposite effect, raising blood glucose back toward normal by promoting glycogenolysis (glycogen breakdown) and gluconeogenesis (new glucose synthesis), chiefly in the liver.
