Vomiting is the forceful, reflex expulsion of the contents of the stomach (and sometimes the upper small intestine) through the mouth. It is controlled by a specific vomiting centre located in the medulla oblongata of the brain, which receives and integrates signals from a variety of possible sources -- irritation or infection of the stomach lining, ingested toxins or spoiled food, motion sickness (via signals from the inner ear), or other bodily stimuli -- and, once triggered, coordinates the forceful contraction of the abdominal muscles and diaphragm together with relaxation of the oesophageal sphincters to expel the stomach's contents.
