Protein-energy malnutrition (PEM) covers two related but distinct conditions: kwashiorkor, from a diet severely deficient in protein despite near-adequate calories (typically after weaning), causing oedema, a pot-bellied appearance, retarded growth and a fatty liver; and marasmus, from a severe deficiency of both calories and protein together (general starvation, typically in infants), causing extreme wasting with no oedema. Indigestion, a feeling of fullness or discomfort after eating, can follow overeating, spicy/fatty food, anxiety, inadequate digestive-enzyme secretion, or bacterial infection. Constipation, infrequent and hard bowel movements, usually results from a low-fibre diet, insufficient water intake or a sedentary lifestyle, all of which allow the colon to reabsorb an excessive amount of water from retained faecal matter. Vomiting, the forceful reflex expulsion of stomach contents, is controlled by the vomiting centre in the medulla oblongata and can be triggered by gastric irritation or infection, ingested toxins, or motion sickness; repeated vomiting risks dehydration. Jaundice, a yellowish discolouration of the skin, eyes and mucous membranes, is caused by a build-up of the bile pigment bilirubin in the blood, which can follow liver disease, bile-duct obstruction, or excessive red-blood-cell breakdown.
