Rickets, caused by vitamin D deficiency in children, produces soft, poorly mineralised bones with characteristic skeletal deformities.

Vitamin D is essential for the absorption of calcium and phosphorus from the intestine and their deposition in bone. When vitamin D is deficient in growing children, bones fail to mineralise properly and remain soft.

Symptoms of Rickets:

  • Bow legs (genu varum) or knock knees (genu valgum) due to bending of weight-bearing long bones.
  • Delayed and stunted growth.
  • Bone pain and tenderness, muscle weakness.
