In C4 leaves, Kranz anatomy arranges large, chloroplast-rich bundle sheath cells around each vascular bundle, surrounded in turn by mesophyll cells. CO2 is first fixed in the mesophyll cytoplasm by PEP carboxylase, forming OAA, which is converted to malic acid and transported into the bundle sheath cells. There it is decarboxylated, releasing CO2 directly inside the cell housing the Calvin cycle, which RuBisCO then fixes as usual.
