When the internal CO2:O2 ratio around RuBisCO falls -- as under hot, bright, dry conditions favouring stomatal closure -- RuBisCO increasingly catalyses its oxygenase reaction with O2 instead of its carboxylase reaction with CO2, producing phosphoglycolate, which is processed through the chloroplast, peroxisome and mitochondrion in the photorespiratory pathway, consuming ATP and releasing previously fixed carbon as CO2, without generating any usable ATP, NADPH or sugar in return -- a genuine net loss to the plant.
