Q.Define species diversity, and state one way in which it can be measured for a given region.
Step 1. Species diversity is one of the three levels of biodiversity, referring specifically to the variety of species -- as opposed to genes within one species, or ecosystems across a landscape -- found within a defined region. Step 2. The most direct way to measure it is species richness: simply counting the number of distinct species present in the area being studied. Step 3. Ecologists also sometimes consider species evenness (how evenly individuals are spread across the species present) as a complementary measure, but richness is the standard, simplest measure expected at this level.
Species diversity is the variety of species present in a region; it is most commonly measured as species richness, the count of distinct species found there.
