Biogas is generated when methanogenic bacteria anaerobically break down organic waste inside a biogas plant, producing a methane-rich fuel gas plus manure as a by-product.

Biogas production process:

  1. Organic waste — typically cattle dung (mixed with water to form a slurry), along with other plant/animal wastes — is fed into a sealed underground tank called a digester in a biogas plant.
  2. Inside the digester, in the complete absence of oxygen (anaerobic conditions), a consortium of anaerobic bacteria, particularly methanogens (e.g. Methanobacterium), break down (ferment) the complex organic matter present in the dung.
  3. This anaerobic digestion releases a mixture of gases — mainly methane (CH₄), along with carbon dioxide (CO₂), hydrogen (H₂) and hydrogen sulphide (H₂S) — collectively called biogas (or gobar gas), which is collected and piped out as a clean-burning fuel used for cooking and lighting.
  4. The leftover spent slurry, still rich in nitrogen and phosphorus, is used as excellent organic manure for fields. …
