A typical rural biogas plant consists of a few interconnected components working together. Dung, mixed with water into a slurry, is introduced through a slurry inlet chamber into a large, sealed underground digester tank that excludes oxygen. Inside this tank, resident anaerobic bacteria -- including methanogens -- ferment and digest the organic matter over a period of days to weeks, releasing biogas as they do so. This gas collects at the top of the digester, and in many designs pushes up a floating gas holder or dome, which rises as gas accumulates; this floating dome provides a simple, built-in pressure mechanism that pushes the collected gas out through a delivery pipe to wherever it is needed, such as a kitchen stove.
