Contraceptive methods fall into several categories, and four representative examples, one from each of the main categories other than the purely natural/traditional group, illustrate how differently they act.

The CONDOM is a barrier method: a thin sheath (male) or lining (female) that physically prevents sperm from reaching the cervix and uterus. It has the added advantage of reducing the risk of transmitting sexually transmitted diseases, since it forms a barrier to infectious organisms as well as to sperm.

The COPPER-T is an intra-uterine device (IUD): a small device inserted into the uterine cavity by a trained health worker, which releases copper ions that reduce sperm motility and fertilising capacity, increase phagocytosis of sperm, and make the uterine lining unfavourable for implantation.

The ORAL CONTRACEPTIVE PILL is a hormonal method: a small daily dose of progestogen (alone or with estrogen) that chiefly inhibits ovulation, so no egg is available to be fertilised, and also thickens cervical mucus to hinder sperm entry.

VASECTOMY (male) and TUBECTOMY (female) are surgical (terminal) methods: a small segment of the vas deferens or fallopian tube respectively is cut and ligated, permanently blocking the passage of sperm or egg. Unlike the first three, these are considered permanent rather than easily reversible.

[!ANSWER]

Condom (barrier -- physical block, also reduces STD risk); Copper-T (IUD -- copper ions reduce sperm motility, uterus made unfavourable for implantation); oral pill (hormonal -- inhibits ovulation); vasectomy/tubectomy (surgical -- permanent ligation of vas deferens/fallopian tube).
