IN VITRO FERTILISATION (IVF), popularly the 'test-tube baby' technique, begins with collecting mature ova from the woman's ovary, generally after hormonal stimulation so more than the usual single egg is available, and sperm from the male partner. The two are brought together outside the body, in a laboratory dish under conditions designed to resemble the natural environment, allowing fertilisation to occur. Once the resulting embryo has developed to an early stage over the following few days, it is transferred back into the woman's body -- either directly into the uterus, or into a fallopian tube -- to continue developing.

ZYGOTE INTRA-FALLOPIAN TRANSFER (ZIFT) refers to this second option specifically: an early embryo (zygote), formed outside the body in the laboratory just as for IVF, is transferred into the woman's fallopian tube rather than the uterus, provided the tube is healthy. From there it travels down on its own and implants in the uterine lining, much as after natural fertilisation.

GAMETE INTRA-FALLOPIAN TRANSFER (GIFT) is different in an important way: no fertilisation happens outside the body at all. It is used chiefly for a woman who cannot produce her own ova but has an otherwise normal, healthy uterus capable of supporting pregnancy. An ovum obtained from a donor is transferred, together with sperm from the recipient's own partner, directly into the recipient's fallopian tube, so that fertilisation and the earliest development happen naturally inside her body. …
