Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), also called STIs, are infections whose main route of spread is sexual contact with an infected person. They are caused by varied organisms: bacteria (gonorrhoea, syphilis), viruses (genital herpes, genital warts, hepatitis-B, HIV/AIDS), fungi (candidiasis) and protozoan parasites (trichomoniasis). A notable feature of several common STDs, particularly gonorrhoea and syphilis in early stages and HIV generally, is that they may cause no obvious symptom for a long period, so an infected person can unknowingly transmit the infection.
