Vasectomy and tubectomy are both permanent, surgical (terminal) methods of contraception, differing in the sex of the person on whom they are performed and the duct involved. Vasectomy is performed on the male: a small segment of each vas deferens, the duct carrying sperm from the epididymis toward the urethra, is cut and ligated, so sperm produced in the testes can no longer reach the ejaculate. Tubectomy is performed on the female: a small segment of each fallopian tube is cut and ligated, so an ovulated egg can no longer travel down to meet sperm, and sperm cannot travel up to reach it.
