Infertility can result from a wide range of underlying causes, which may lie in either partner. Physical or structural causes include a blockage in the fallopian tubes or in the sperm-carrying ducts, or abnormalities of the uterus. Hormonal causes include irregular or absent ovulation in the woman, or inadequate sperm production in the man. Congenital causes are abnormalities present from birth. Disease-related causes include the after-effects of certain infections, including untreated sexually transmitted diseases, which can scar and block the fallopian tubes.
