Question 34 of 52

Q.Arrange the following solutions in order of decreasing specific conductance:

(i) 0.01 M NaCl
(ii) 0.05 M NaCl
(iii) 0.1 M NaCl
(iv) 0.5 M NaCl. Resistance of a conductivity cell filled with 0.1 M KCl solution is 80 ohm. The conductivity cell has a cell constant of 1.0 cm⁻¹. Find out the molar conductance of the KCl solution. OR Determine ΔG° and the value of the equilibrium constant for the following reaction occurring in an electrochemical cell at 25°C: Cu(s) + 2Ag⁺(aq) → Cu²⁺(aq) + 2Ag(s). Given that, E°(Cu2+/Cu) = 0.34 V and E°(Ag+/Ag) = 0.80 V.

Specific conductance rises with concentration (more ions per cm³), so the order is 0.5 M > 0.1 M > 0.05 M > 0.01 M; the KCl cell data give a molar conductance of 125 S cm² mol⁻¹.

Order of specific conductance: Specific conductance (κ) is the conductance of a 1 cm³ volume of solution — it depends on the number of current-carrying ions per unit volume. Even though molar conductance (Λm) decreases as concentration rises (due to inter-ionic attraction reducing ionic mobility), specific conductance for a strong electrolyte like NaCl keeps increasing with concentration over this range, because the number of ions per unit volume grows faster than the mobility falls. So, in decreasing order of specific conductance:

(iv) 0.5 M>(iii) 0.1 M>(ii) 0.05 M>(i) 0.01 M(iv)\ 0.5\ M > (iii)\ 0.1\ M > (ii)\ 0.05\ M > (i)\ 0.01\ M
