Specific conductance (kappa) is the conductance of unit volume (1 cm^3) of solution between electrodes of unit area and unit separation; molar conductance Lambda_m accounts for all the ions from 1 mole of electrolyte and is linked to kappa by Lambda_m = kappa x 1000 / C.

Specific conductance (conductivity), kappa

Conductance G = 1/R. For a conductor, R = rho x (l/A), so G = (1/rho)(A/l) = kappa (A/l), where kappa = 1/rho is the specific conductance.

When l = 1 cm and A = 1 cm^2, G = kappa. Hence kappa is the conductance of a solution enclosed between two electrodes 1 cm apart, each of cross-sectional area 1 cm^2 (that is, the conductance of 1 cm^3 of solution). Its SI-derived unit is S cm^-1 (ohm^-1 cm^-1).

Relation between molar conductance and specific conductance

Molar conductance Lambda_m is the conductance of all the ions produced by one mole of electrolyte dissolved in a volume V (cm^3) of solution:

Lambda_m = kappa x V

If C is the concentration in mol L^-1, then one mole occupies V = 1000/C cm^3, so:

Lambda_m = kappa x 1000 / C (units: S cm^2 mol^-1)
