A colloid (or colloidal solution) is a heterogeneous-at-the-microscopic-level mixture in which particles of one substance (the dispersed phase), of a size between about 1 nm1\ \text{nm} and 1000 nm1000\ \text{nm}, are spread through a second substance (the dispersion medium), fine enough to remain indefinitely dispersed under Brownian movement without settling, yet coarse enough to scatter visible light (the Tyndall effect) and to be retained by an ultrafilter. A true solution has still smaller, individually dissolved ions or molecules, below about 1 nm1\ \text{nm}, that neither scatter light nor are retained by any filter. A suspension has still larger, visible particles, above about 1000 nm1000\ \text{nm}, that settle out under gravity and are retained even by ordinary filter paper. [!ANSWER] True solution (<1 nm<1\ \text{nm}), colloid (11–1000 nm1000\ \text{nm}), and suspension (>1000 nm>1000\ \text{nm}) are distinguished chiefly by the size of the dispersed particles, which in turn governs filterability, settling and light-scattering behaviour.
