Species diversity refers to the variety of different species within a specific region, while ecological diversity describes the variety of different ecosystems across a larger geographical area.

To understand the distinction between species diversity and ecological diversity, we must first appreciate the broader concept of biodiversity itself. Biodiversity, in its essence, is the total sum of the variety of life at all levels of biological organisation. This vast concept is typically categorised into three fundamental levels: genetic diversity, species diversity, and ecological diversity. Each level offers a unique lens through which to view the richness and complexity of life on Earth.

Species diversity focuses on the variety observed at the species level. It quantifies the number of different species present in a particular region or community. This includes not only the sheer count of distinct species (known as species richness) but also the relative abundance of individuals belonging to each of those species (species evenness). A region with high species diversity would, therefore, host a large number of different species, and these species would likely be represented by a relatively balanced number of individuals, rather than being dominated by just a few.

Note

The NCERT textbook illustrates species diversity by comparing the Western Ghats and the Eastern Ghats in India. It highlights that the Western Ghats exhibit a greater amphibian species diversity than the Eastern Ghats, meaning there are more types of amphibian species found in the Western Ghats.

In contrast, ecological diversity examines the variety at the ecosystem level. An ecosystem encompasses all the living organisms (biotic components) in a particular area, interacting with each other and with their non-living physical environment (abiotic components), such as soil, water, and climate. Ecological diversity, therefore, refers to the range of different types of ecosystems present within a larger geographical area. It considers the diversity of habitats, biotic communities, and ecological processes. …
