Sacred groves are patches of forest protected by local communities through religious beliefs, acting as vital refuges for biodiversity and preserving ecosystems for centuries.

Sacred groves are among the oldest forms of in-situ conservation practised in India. These are tracts of forest that local communities protect and revere, often dedicated to a deity or ancestral spirit. The trees, animals, and even the soil within these groves are considered sacred, and any form of extraction — felling trees, hunting, or collecting firewood — is strictly forbidden by tradition. This cultural taboo has, over generations, created undisturbed pockets of native vegetation that survive even in heavily deforested landscapes.

The role of sacred groves in biodiversity conservation is profound and multi-layered. Because human interference is minimal, these groves serve as living gene banks for rare and endemic species. Many plants and animals that have vanished from surrounding farmlands or urban areas find their last refuge here. For instance, the NCERT textbook states this specifically about Meghalaya: sacred groves there "are the last refuges for a large number of rare and threatened plants." The groves also protect the soil from erosion, recharge groundwater, and maintain local microclimates — all without any formal government decree.

Note

The NCERT textbook names the actual regions where sacred groves are found in India: the Khasi and Jaintia Hills of Meghalaya, the Aravalli Hills of Rajasthan, the Western Ghat regions of Karnataka and Maharashtra, and the Sarguja, Chanda and Bastar areas of Madhya Pradesh. …
