Frugivorous means fruit-eating — organisms whose diet consists primarily or entirely of fruits.

The term "frugivorous" comes from the Latin frugis (fruit) and vorare (to devour). It describes animals that feed mainly on fruits, making them a specialized category within the broader herbivore group. This dietary preference isn't just about taste; it reflects a deep ecological relationship between fruit-bearing plants and the animals that consume their produce.

Frugivorous animals play a crucial role in forest ecosystems, particularly in seed dispersal. When a bat, bird, monkey, or other frugivore eats a fruit, the seeds often pass through its digestive system unharmed and are deposited far from the parent plant — sometimes kilometers away. This mutualistic relationship benefits both parties: the plant gets its seeds spread across a wider area, increasing the chances of germination in favorable spots, while the animal receives nutrition in the form of sugars, vitamins, and moisture.

In the Indian context, several species exhibit frugivorous behavior:

  • Flying foxes (fruit bats) are important pollinators and seed dispersers for trees like mango, guava, and fig
  • Hornbills consume fruits whole and regurgitate or defecate seeds, making them keystone species in tropical forests
  • Langurs and macaques feed extensively on fruits, though they're technically omnivores
  • Parakeets and barbets also contribute to seed dispersal in forest ecosystems …
