Q.Among the following amines, the strongest Brönsted base is ____.

(i) aniline (C6H5NH2)
(ii) NH3
(iii) pyrrole (an aromatic five-membered ring with one N–H, in which the nitrogen lone pair is part of the aromatic sextet)

The strongest base is the one whose nitrogen lone pair is most available. In pyrrolidine the lone pair is fully localised on nitrogen, whereas in pyrrole and aniline it is delocalised, and NH3 has no electron-donating alkyl groups. So pyrrolidine is the strongest base.

Concept

Basicity rises when the N lone pair is more available and the nitrogen is more electron rich. Anything that delocalises that lone pair (aromatic conjugation) sharply lowers basicity.

Comparing the four

  • (iv) pyrrolidine: saturated five-membered ring; nitrogen is sp3 with its lone pair fully available and flanked by two electron-donating –CH2– groups → strongest base (comparable to a dialkylamine).
  • (ii) NH3: lone pair available but no electron-donating substituents → moderate base, weaker than an aliphatic amine. …
