Eddy currents are closed-loop induced currents that circulate within the volume of a conductor when it experiences a changing magnetic flux; they dissipate energy as heat (I²R losses) unless put to deliberate use.

Eddy currents: When a bulk piece of a conductor (like a metal plate or core) is subjected to a changing magnetic flux (either because the conductor moves through a non-uniform field, or because the field itself varies with time), induced currents are set up in the body of the conductor circulating in closed loops, resembling eddies in a stream. These are called eddy currents.

Three uses of eddy currents:

  1. Electromagnetic braking: In trains and some roller-coasters, strong electromagnets are mounted near the rails/metal wheel. When activated, eddy currents induced in the moving metal oppose the motion (Lenz's law) and rapidly brake the vehicle, without mechanical contact.
  2. Induction furnace: Used to melt metals by placing them in a rapidly changing magnetic field produced by a high-frequency current-carrying coil; strong eddy currents are induced in the metal, and the heat generated (I2RI^2R) melts it. …
