Eddy currents, though usually an unwanted energy loss, are advantageously used in braking systems, damping instruments, induction heating, and induction motors.

Eddy currents are circulating (loop) currents induced within the bulk of a conductor when it experiences a changing magnetic flux. While they often cause undesirable heating losses (e.g. in transformer/motor cores, which is why laminated cores are used), they are put to advantageous use in several devices:

  1. Magnetic braking in trains: strong electromagnets are mounted near the rails; when activated, the eddy currents induced in the rails oppose the relative motion (by Lenz's law), providing smooth, wear-free braking.

  2. Electromagnetic damping: in galvanometers, the coil is wound on a light aluminium frame; as the coil (and frame) moves, eddy currents induced in the frame oppose the motion, quickly damping oscillations so the pointer settles rapidly (a "dead-beat" galvanometer).

  3. Induction furnace: a high-frequency alternating magnetic field induces strong eddy currents in a metal sample placed inside a coil; the resulting I²R heating is enough to melt the metal, used for preparing alloys and purifying metals.
