Although eddy currents usually cause unwanted energy loss (heating) in transformer/motor cores, that same heating and damping effect is put to deliberate use in several devices.

Eddy currents are circulating (loop-like) induced currents set up within the bulk of a conductor when it experiences a changing magnetic flux (from relative motion or a changing field). They dissipate energy as heat (I2RI^2R loss) and exert a retarding (damping) force opposing the motion/change that caused them (Lenz's law). Several devices exploit exactly this:

  1. Electromagnetic braking: in trains and roller-coasters, strong magnets are brought near a moving metal wheel/rail; the eddy currents induced in the metal oppose its motion, providing smooth, contact-less (wear-free) braking.
  2. Induction furnace: a high-frequency alternating magnetic field induces strong eddy currents in a metal sample placed inside a coil; the resulting I2RI^2R heating is intense enough to melt the metal, used to produce very pure alloys.
  3. Induction motors: the rotor (often a shorted 'squirrel cage') carries eddy currents induced by the stator's rotating magnetic field; the force on these currents (Lenz's law) drives the rotor to turn. …
