Several specific monocular cues can be identified. Relative size uses the fact that an object's retinal image shrinks as it moves farther away, so a smaller-looking object (relative to experience) is judged as farther, a bigger-looking one as nearer. Interposition (overlapping) occurs when one object partly covers another; the partly hidden object is judged farther away. Linear perspective is the apparent convergence of parallel lines (like railway tracks) toward a vanishing point on the horizon as they recede into the distance -- greater convergence signals greater distance. Aerial perspective arises because dust and moisture in the air make very distant objects look hazy or bluish, while the same objects look sharp and close when the air is very clear. Light and shade -- the highlights and shadows cast on an object -- provide information about its form and distance. Relative height uses the assumption that, when two objects are expected to be the same size, the one that looks smaller is judged farther away. Texture gradient is the increasing density of a repeating surface texture (such as stones in a wall) as the surface recedes into the distance. Motion parallax is a kinetic (movement-based), rather than purely pictorial, monocular cue: as we move (say, in a moving bus), nearby objects appear to sweep past rapidly against our direction of motion, while distant objects appear to drift by slowly in the same direction as our motion -- the apparent speed of an object's movement relative to us cues its distance. …
