Its major areas of study are attention, perception, memory, reasoning, problem-solving, decision-making, and language. To study these processes, cognitive psychologists generally conduct controlled experiments in laboratory settings, though some instead take an ecological approach, examining the same cognitive processes as they naturally occur in everyday, real-world settings rather than an artificial laboratory one.
Cognitive psychology's connection to neuroscience is close and direct, because cognitive processes such as attention and memory are ultimately implemented in the brain. Fast-developing brain-imaging techniques such as fMRI and EEG now make it possible to study brain processes in real time, as they actually happen while a person thinks or solves a problem, giving cognitive psychologists working with neuroscientists a much more direct window into cognition than earlier methods such as introspection ever allowed. …
